The people of Petran, Turkey, have been snowboarding for roughly 300 years. It’s not snowboarding as we know it, but you’ll recognize it.

Foothills: The Unlinked Heritage of Snowboarding by WRKSHRT, following Alex Yoder and Nick Russell into Turkey’s Kaçkar Mountains on a quest to unearth the origins and unlinked heritage of snowboarding and have some fun in the process.

Petranboarding began as a cultural phenomenon in the village of Petran in the 18th century, deep in the mountains of eastern Turkey and is one of the earliest iterations of snowboarding that we know about. The tradition is still alive today and this film brings us right into the action.

This beautifully edited and narrated documentary also offers some amazing ethnic / cultural tunes, eastern drums and two songs from the future Easy Giant album that’s available next month on iTunes and Spotify. ( –Nick says so on vimeo. )
